General Forklift Safety
OSHA 1910.178 for Powered Industrial Trucks or P.I.T.'s is the main guideline companies must follow if the facility uses any type of forklift. This class satisfies the operator's formal training requirements for general forklift safety. The training in this class only covers safe operations for Class I, IV, V, and III trucks. These are called Sit-down and Standup Counterbalance, Electric Pallet Jacks, Walkie Riders, and Walkie Stacker-Type lifts. The training reviews both propane and electric-powered lifts.
Stand Up Reach
Stand Up Reach operators can take advantage of this single-lift type class if they only operate this type of lift or if it is an add-on to their General Forklift Training. This class reviews Class II P.I.T.'s, electric narrow aisle trucks. OSHA guidelines require that operators be trained on the lift they will operate, and this lift type is not included in the general class. This general standup reach class is valid for any brand of Stand Up Reach. Still, your company evaluator should review the specific controls for the lift you will use during your evaluation.
Order Picker / Turret Truck
Order Picker and Turret Trucks are unique types of forklifts. They are a Class II, like Stand Up Reach, but do not have the same characteristics or functions as a Stand Up Reach or any Counter Balance Lift. Order pickers allow operators to walk around the platform and pick products while elevated. Turret Trucks elevate the operator but only use forks to pick and move pallets. Both require fall protection, and this training includes fall safety and rescue plans similar to aerial requirements.
Telehandler
Telehandler forklifts can be Telescopic Boom, Rough Terrain, Boom Lift, Gheil, Jig, and Shooting Boom. Set as Class IIV, this lift type is recognized for its training and function, which differ from other lift types. These lifts do not have a vertical mast like most warehouse forklifts and are typically used on construction sites where the ground is dirt or unpaved. These lifts raise materials to upper levels and have unique turning capabilities.
Electric Pallet Jack
Electric Pallet Jacks, Walkie Riders, and Walkie Stackers are Class III-type PITs. Although these lifts are included in the General Forklift Class, many operators only use them at their facility and do not need the additional training that comes with the Counterbalance lifts.
NOT FOR Sit Down or Other Types of Forkift
Truck Mounted - Piggyback
Truck-mounted forklifts are also known as Piggybacks, Donkeys, and Moffet trucks. They are designed to support construction operations, helping delivery operators unload their flatbeds in rough terrain. Truck-mounted forklifts are NOT counterbalanced and do not fall under the other training programs.
MEWP (Aerial) All Lift Types
MEWP (aerial lift) operator class covers all classifications of mobile elevating work platforms. This includes aerial booms, straight and articulating, scissor lifts, personal (single-person) lift devices, bucket trucks, and forklift work platforms.
Fall Protection
This fall protection class is designed to support company training of personnel who utilize fall protection in their jobs.
Advanced Flagger
Advance Flagger course provides those in a flagger position with knowledge and understanding to promote safer and more compliant work activity. This course meets OSHA requirements and guidelines.
